Hypnosis is an altered state of
consciousness, where the subconscious level of the mind is open to receive
suggestions.
We all experience hypnosis everyday without realizing
it!
Some examples of light hypnosis are:
- Daydreaming
- Driving a car (I will talk about that in a
moment!)
- Engaged in a book, movie or TV show
- Playing a video game
Yes we enter a light form of hypnosis while driving!
Have you ever been so focused in thought or engaged in the radio that you miss
your exit, or just don't remember passing familiar landmarks. Have you
ever thought to yourself "I don't remember the last few minutes of the
drive"? You see while the conscious mind was focusing on your plans
for the day or the radio, the subconscious mind safely took over the task of
driving!
The conscious mind is very analytical whereas the subconscious
mind takes everything literally. It cannot tell what is real or
imagined. This is why we can enjoy a movie or TV show with familiar actors
in it. Our subconscious mind allows us to become engaged in the story.
Lets try a little test..... Say your ABC's as fast as you can
right now..... Great! Now lets see how fast you can say them reciting every
other letter...ACE etc. What! .... not as fast! You see your ABC's
are etched into your subconscious, whereas your conscious mind has to think
about saying every other letter.
What Hypnosis Is Not
- A hypnotized person is not asleep
- Hypnosis is not a polygraph
- The hypnotized person is not out of control
- A person cannot be made to do anything
against their will while in hypnosis
- A hypnotized person will not divulge
secrets
- Hypnosis is not dangerous
- A hypnotized person cannot get 'stuck' in
hypnosis
- The hypnotized person does not have memory
loss about the session
- A hypnotist does not have magical powers
- Hypnosis is not the work of the
devil. It is a natural part of our life.
